The Record BelowThe record first. Then what I think.

Corrections

Everything this publication has gotten wrong is on this page, permanently, with the date.

A correction log is not an embarrassment. For a publication with no byline and no masthead, it is the main thing a reader has to go on. A publication that never corrects anything is not careful. It is either lucky or not looking.

How to request a correction

Write to [email protected] and name two things:

  1. The specific statement you say is wrong, quoted, and where it appears
  2. What is actually the case, and how you know

We aim to respond within three business days. You do not need to be the subject of a piece to request a correction. If you are right, we correct it and log it here whether or not you asked nicely.

Right of reply

Anyone named in a record may respond, and we will publish a response of reasonable length alongside the piece it concerns. Write to the same address.

How corrections work here

  • Corrections are appended to the piece, not written over it. The original text stays, marked.
  • Every correction is dated and says what was wrong, not just what is now right.
  • Nothing is silently removed. If a piece comes down, a notice stays up saying it came down.
  • A source that turns out to be unreliable gets its grade lowered across every record that used it, and each affected record is noted here.

No corrections yet. This page exists before there is anything to put on it, which is the point.
